POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
Unsupported GPS Devices

Unfortunately we do not have nearly as much hands on experience with or intimate knowledge about any other GPS unit. Not that we don't want to support them, but we can only do so much due to the myriad of different GPS devices available.
Other Specific Devices Not Listed Above
Other than the specific GPS units listed on this page, we do not have enough experience with any other unit to make any recommendations about any it.

If you use an unsupported GPS unit and we decide to use GPS devices instead of route signage we will plan on providing you one of our GPS units.

on your own
Provide file downloads, can't guarantee they'll work
we cannot guarantee that these route dataset files will be compatible with any GPS device
Can try

Even if you are not able to incorporate our route dataset files into your device's operation, you can still use other devices in cunjuction with cue sheets and maps (particularly non-Androis smartphones)
- can see exact current location
- just won't necessarily be able to directly follow our route on your device
Otherwise if you prefer to not mount the GPS unit on your handlebars, it will also easily fit into a jersey back pocket.

We want to learn from your experience in order to add specific GPS units to the list of units we can support, especially the ones more popular with cyclists, and we would greatly appreciate letting let us know how well (successfully or unsuccessfully) you were able to make our GPS route dataset files work with your GPS unit. After the event, we may also follow up with individual participants in order to get a better understanding of how well the GPS route dataset files worked with their specific unit.
Willing to learn. Help us learn with your device.
Will work on accommodating more and more specific GPS devices as the technology improves, smartphones become more common, and based on the specific devices we actually see participants using during our events.
E-mail re: apps for other phones
Want to learn to ensure they'll work
Help other people get set up, see how devices work both during and after the event

However we do recommend using the GPS unit in conjunction with the paper in town cue sheets and maps so that you can know your exact location in each town at all times.

Unsupported GPS Units
All other GPS devices not listed
we haven't heard of cyclists using GPS units from any other manufacturer (such as Tom Tom)

THE FOLLOWING GPS UNITS ARE UNSUPPORTED!

Even though the following GPS units are similar to the supported units listed above, they all have an extremely limited internal memory which do not have the capacity to hold the necessary base map sets (TBD). In addition, none of these units has a separate expansion slot which can hold an external memory card on which additional base map sets can be stored (TBD). As a result we can not ever support these units.

We DO NOT recommend purchasing any of the Garmin Edge or Forerunner series GPS units because they are powered by internal rechargeable batteries and not standard or removable ones.

Unsupported Smartphones

Unfortunately the only app that does what we are looking for is available for Andriod only. If you know of a good GPS program for iPhone, Blackberry, or Windows phone that you would like to get incorporated please let us know - we would be happy to hear about it!

We do see the progression and increasing prevalence of smartphone GPS technology as the next technological wave of the future for GPS based cycling navigation and will continue to work on incorporating this exciting new capability into our events as the technology improves.
