RAIL South Specific Updates for the 2018 Season

2/9/18

  • RAIL South will not be held in 2018 due to scheduling conflicts with our GRABAAWR tour. We expect RAIL South to return next season on Sat. June 22nd, 2019 so mark your calendar today!

Major Previous RAIL South Specific Updates

  • The MegaBus stop in St. Louis is now at the Gateway Transportation Center which is also the Amtrak Train and Greyhound Bus station. Click Here for more information.
  • All participants using our transportation service from Vincennes to St. Louis on the Friday before the start of the event must now arrive at the Vincennes staging point at 9:30 am CST (10:30 am EST).
  • A supported lunch stop will be available directly on the route at the Subway restaurant in Olney, only 0.5 miles before rest stop 4. Click Here for more information.
  • The ending location in Vincennes is now at Gregg Park. Showers, a swimming pool, and parking for the event are available directly there at no charge!
    • Baggage to be delivered to the Vincennes hotel will now be identified using hotel baggage delivery tags.
  • The route opening and closing times will be "around" sunrise & sunset at 5:30 am CDT and 8:30 pm CDT (9:30 pm EDT) for year after year consistency purposes and to make the route opening and closing times easier to remember for participants on the road.
  • Ice cream stores have been added to list of in town facilities for all stopping towns!
  • The regular registration deadline will now be three weeks before the start of the event to at least be the same as (if not after) the cut-off dates for our room blocks at our supported hotels.
  • A personalized Certificate of Completion will no longer be available.
  • Late registration will only be available online and not through paper registration.
  • RAIL South transportation services have changed as follows:
    • For the Transportation Service from Vincennes to Chicago on the Sunday After the End of the Event, participants will travel from Vincennes to Effingham, IL and transfer in Effingham to an Amtrak train that will transport them the rest of the way to Chicago. This is because the Greyhound bus that travels directly from Vincennes to Chicago now arrives in Chicago at 12:25 am (about an hour and a half later than before at 10:50 pm CST) which we feel would be too late. Click Here for more information.
    • Participants taking the Transportation Service from Vincennes to St. Louis Before the Start of the Event will need to drop off their bikes at the Vincennes bike shop if nine or more people register for the Transportation Service from Chicago to St. Louis Before the Start of the Event. This is because we will not be able to arrive in Vincennes from Chicago by the time participants need to arrive at the staging point. After we arrive in Vincennes we will promptly load all bicycles dropped off at the bike shop and depart for St. Louis. As a result the transportation staging point in Vincennes before the start of the event is now directly at the Vincennes bike shop. Click Here for more information.
    • Participants taking the Transportation Service from Vincennes to St. Louis After the End of the Event will need to pick up their bikes from the St. Louis bike shop if five or more people register for the Transportation Service from Vincennes to Chicago After the End of the Event. This is because we would not be able to arrive in Chicago by the time the Amtrak train does if we waited in St. Louis until the Greyhound bus arrived there. Click Here for more information.
  • Rest stop 3 in Flora is now at the Kiwanis Park.
  • RAIL South will be held on the Saturday on or after June 21st (the longest day of the year) on a recurring basis which gives participants the maximum amount of daylight possible to complete the event. Despite several of our other events changing their recurring date structure in order to accommodate our new Bike Wisconsin events, RAIL South will continue to occur on this recurring schedule due to our participants' overwhelming preference to keep it on Saturday that we learned from our pre-season survey. Click Here for the dates of the future RAIL South events.
  • We now allow trikes (any bicycle with three or more wheels) to participate in our events. However, all participants riding trikes must provide their own on road support for them at all times because we cannot guarantee that we will be able to easily or quickly transport them off the road in any support vehicle in case of mechanical breakdown. In addition, we still cannot accomodate any trikes on any of our transportation services. Click Here for more information.
  • As part of registration you can now specify whether you would you like us to give you your t-shirt and any other merchandise items at the starting or ending location. No more worrying about where to put your new stuff during the ride!
  • Room blocks will no longer be available in Vincennes, you will need to call for the best rate yourself. We strongly recommend making your reservation as soon as possible to avoid any availability issues from other participants or anyone else, secure the lowest rate, and assure yourself a room! Click Here for more information.
