BikeFlights
We highly recommend using BikeFlights (www.bikeflights.com)
to generate your shipping documents. BikeFlights has partnered
with United
Parcel Service (UPS) and
the rates you will receive through them are significantly
lower than UPS's standard rates. BikeFlights will directly
email you the necessary documents to print out and
attach to your boxed bicycle for shipment.
To create your shipping documents, enter your shipping information
into the BikeFlights web
site (origin, destination, date, package size and weight,
etc.) You can choose to have
your boxed bicycle picked up or drop it off yourself at a
UPS location, and you can also purchase
additional
shipment insurance as necessary.
Other Carriers
If
you don't generate your shipping documents through
BikeFlights, you
can also generate them directly yourself
through United
Parcel Service (UPS)
or Federal
Express (FedEx).
For
international shipments, you may also be able to ship your boxed bicycle
via DHL.
Almost
all bicycle shipping containers exceed the maximum package dimensions
of
the United
States Postal Service (USPS)
so you should not plan on using them as your shipping carrier. Shipping Rates
Shipping rates are influenced by both the size and
the weight of your shipment. To get the most economical shipping rates, the
Shipment Size of your shipping container should be less than or equal
to 130 inches, where the Shipment Size = Length + 2 x Width + 2 x
Height. You can also ship packages with a Shipment Size of up to 165,
but it will be charged at oversized rates which are significantly higher.
Very large shipping containers and shipping tandem, trike, recumbent, extra-long
recumbent
bikes
will most
likely
incur oversized charges. Freight rates apply to shipping containers
with shipment
sizes above 165.
Weight matters also, but it tends not to be an issue for bikes, which are
relatively light. FedEx and UPS will ship packages up to 150 lb (68kg) but
you'll get the best rates for packages under 70 lb.
Shipping rates will also depend on the shipment speed (ground, 2-day, overnight
etc.)
You will need to check with the individual shipping carriers for specific
shipping rate information.

Shipment Tracking
You can easily check the progress of your shipped bike yourself through the
tracking number provided by the shipping carrier to ensure your bike's
on-time arrival. We highly recommend signing up for automated e-mail and text alerts regarding
updates of the status of your shipment including notice of delivery or
any shipping delays. Insurance
Given the high value of bicycle shipments,
we strongly recommend purchasing
additional shipping insurance above the basic
level of insurance all shipping carriers provide in case your bicycle is
damaged during shipping. Note that damage to shipping containers due to normal
handling
is
not covered.
We will not be responsible for any damage incurred during any
aspect of shipping bicycles to or from our events.
Hazardous
Items
You must also make sure to properly pack any hazardous items that are restricted
for shipment by the shipping carrier, such as CO2 cartridges and lithium
batteries.
