Long Distance Public Transportation and Transporting Your Bicycle to the Start of the Tour
If you will be travelling aboard a long distance public transportation carrier before the start of the tour, it may make more sense to initially ship your bike to the Carbondale bike shop and have it unboxed and reassembled there instead of another stopping town, particularly Chicago. You will still be able to arrive in another stopping town with your baggage on a long distance public transportation carrier to take advantage of the public transportation options available there and take the Amtrak train to Carbondale.

If you initially ship your bicycle to the Carbondale bike shop before the start of the tour, you will still need to:

  • Register for our Transportation Service from Carbondale to Cairo before the start of the tour.
  • Travel to Carbondale with all other participants aboard the 391 Saluki Amtrak train scheduled to arrive in Carbondale at 1:45 pm
  • Rurchase your individual Amtrak train ticket on your own.

If you initially ship your bike to the Carbondale bike shop you will be able to save money by only having to pay for our transportation service from Carbondale to Cairo (and not to Carbondale and Cairo). You will also not have to worry about picking up your bike from another bike shop (particularly Chicago) before the start of the tour and also a significant amount of hassle instead of transporting it with you aboard the public transportation carrier.

The Carbondale bike shop is located directly across the street from the Amtrak train station so you will easily be able to walk over there to pick up your fully assembled bike immediately after the train arrives.

Initial Arrival Location

Initial Arrival in Chicago
This option is most popular with participants from the Chicago area and areas north of there such as Milwaukee and Detroit.

Initial Arrival at a Mid-Route Stop
This option is most popular with participants from areas in and around central Illinois.

Initial Arrival in Carbondale
This option is most popular with participants from areas in and around southern Illinois including Carbondale, St. Louis, Louisville, and Nashville.

Participants who want to initially park their car at the start of the tour must park their car in Carbondale and take the transportation service from Carbondale to Cairo.

Initial Arrival in Cairo
If you will not need to park your car at the start of the tour (such as getting dropped off), we strongly recommend initially arriving in Cairo rather than in Carbondale. Doing so will eliminate having to pay for or use the transportation service from Carbondale to Cairo.
